How Walmart clearance works

Walmart clearance is local. The same item can be marked down at one store and full price at another a few miles away, so it pays to know where to look and what to check.

Each store has its own clearance

Clearance is how a store moves stock it has too much of, so it depends on what that store has left. Walmart says that store inventory, overstock, local promotions and local competition can all make prices differ between its locations. That is why one store’s markdown is not a promise that the store down the road has the same price.

Where markdowns tend to show up

In many stores, clearance collects on the ends of aisles and in a clearance section, with a clearance sign or sticker on the shelf. Seasonal goods after a holiday, toys, electronics and home goods are where shoppers often find the biggest drops. Not every markdown gets a new tag right away, which is where hidden clearance comes from.

Check the price at your store

The price that counts is the one your store charges at the register. If you shop with the Walmart app, set it to the store you are in and look the item up there. You can also ask an employee for a price check before you get in line.

Before you make a trip

A markdown seen a few days ago may be gone, and a low price does not mean the item is on the shelf. Look at when the price was last seen, call the store if it is a long drive, and check the return terms on clearance items. More in how to check a clearance find before you drive.
