Why a markdown can differ between nearby stores

Two nearby stores can show different prices for what looks like the same item. A difference can be useful when planning a trip, but the listing alone does not explain why either store set its price.

What can make prices differ?

Walmart says that store inventory, overstock, local promotions, and local competition can contribute to price differences between its locations. Those are publicly stated possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular markdown. Other retailers may make different decisions, and a listing cannot tell you which factors influenced its price.

Make sure you are comparing the same item

Check the complete item name and details such as size, pack count, color, or model. A small difference can matter. If the details do not match, treat the listings as different items rather than assuming one store is cheaper for the same thing.

Check the location and the last-seen date

Make sure each price belongs to the store you are considering. Do not assume a price seen at one location applies at another. Save Babe shows when a price was last seen; it may have changed since then. A listing also does not guarantee that the item is currently on the shelf.

Decide whether the difference is worth the trip

Consider the drive, your time, and whether you are already going that way. Before a special trip, check the item, price and availability.
