Penny items: what they are and what to expect

A penny item is one that rings up at $0.01. It is real, but it is luck, and it is never something to plan a long drive around.

Why an item rings up at a penny

A penny price usually means the store has marked the item to be taken off the floor, often after its last clearance markdown. Shoppers talk about it most at Dollar General and Home Depot. The item may still be on a shelf when it happens, which is how people find them.

A store may not sell it

Because these items are meant to be pulled, many stores are told not to sell them, and a cashier or manager may say no. That is the store’s call. Be polite, and do not count on it.

Penny lists go stale fast

Penny lists online are shared by shoppers. They are a snapshot of what someone saw at one store on one day, so an item on a list may never reach a penny at yours, or may already be gone. Treat a list as a hint, not a plan.

A steadier bet: regular clearance near you

Deep markdowns that come before the penny stage are easier to find and much more likely to be sold to you. Start with how Home Depot clearance works and how Walmart clearance works.
